Former UK Finance Minister Joins Coinbase as Global Advisor

Coinbase has strengthened its regulatory expertise with the addition of George Osborne, the former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, to its global advisory council. Osborne, who served from 2010 to 2016, joins prominent figures like Mark Esper and Patrick Toomey to guide Coinbase’s global strategy.

Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, expressed excitement about Osborne’s involvement during a crucial time for the company both in the UK and globally. Osborne, known for his diverse experience in business, journalism, and government, will play a crucial role in connecting Coinbase with politicians and regulators to navigate crypto-friendly regulations.

During his tenure as Chancellor, Osborne implemented austerity policies to address the budget deficit, and now, he brings his insights to the rapidly evolving world of finance. Currently a partner at Robey Warshaw LLP, Osborne expressed enthusiasm about blockchain’s transformative impact on financial markets and online transactions.

The relationship between Osborne and Coinbase developed further last year, with CEO Brian Armstrong speaking at events alongside Osborne. Coinbase’s expansion across Europe, including securing licenses in France, Spain, Singapore, and Bermuda, contrasts with regulatory challenges in the US. The SEC has accused Coinbase of violating securities laws, a claim the company vehemently denies.

Despite potential regulatory pressures in the US, Armstrong clarified that Coinbase has no formal plans to relocate from its San Francisco headquarters. However, he emphasized the importance of regulatory clarity for the company’s global operations.

As Coinbase continues its global expansion, Osborne’s advisory role adds valuable experience to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape in the cryptocurrency industry.
