Bitfinex Shuts Down P2P Marketplace

Bitfinex has announced the discontinuation of its Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Marketplace service, marking a significant shift for its trading platform. After a strategic review, the exchange has decided to phase out the service, with March 26, 2025, set as the final shutdown date.

For those currently using Bitfinex’s P2P platform, there are key dates to keep in mind. Starting March 19, 2025, you will no longer be able to post ads, execute new trades, or create new profiles. By March 26, 2025, access via the web interface, mobile app, and API will be completely removed.

What This Means for Existing P2P Users

Although new trades will not be possible after March 19, existing users will still be able to view their transaction history. Bitfinex has confirmed that customers can access their past transactions on Bitfinex website or through the Bitfinex Mobile App until the service is fully decommissioned.

Additionally, Bitfinex will remove the P2P Marketplace shortcuts from its platform as part of the shutdown process.

Final Closure Date: March 26, 2025

On March 26, 2025, Bitfinex will completely shut down its P2P Marketplace. At that point, all access, including via API, will be discontinued. If you have any concerns or need assistance, Bitfinex encourages you to reach out to their customer support team.

Why Is Bitfinex Discontinuing Its P2P Service?

While Bitfinex has not provided specific reasons for the closure, strategic reviews often indicate shifts in business focus, regulatory adjustments, or operational optimizations. This change could signal a move towards other trading solutions or a streamlined platform experience.

In all likelihood, Bitfinex is simply shutting down its P2P market due to low usage. Currently, there are only a few major traders on the market selling crypto for Euros and US dollars, with many other supported currencies without any listed ads.

In recent years, buying crypto has become more accessible. Firstly, there’s been a large increase in number of available fiat gateway services. And secondly, many exchanges implemented direct deposits via bank transfers and cards. As a result, the need for P2P marketplaces has severely diminished.

Despite many P2P trading alternatives, many countries and cryptocurrency investors have little choice but to use peer to peer markets for their crypto purchases. In countries such as Nigeria or China, P2P markets often remain the primary or even only means of buying crypto.

No need to despair. The removal of Bitfinex’s P2P marketplace may be a blow to few traders who relied on it, but plenty of alternatives remain fully operation.

The world’s largest exchange Binance still has a very vibrant and active P2P marketplace, catering to customers from over a hundred countries who can use local currencies and payment methods to buy crypto safely by trading with many verified users on the platform.

Similarly, OKX has grown into another P2P powerhouse, offering similar features and availability to its customers. Other large CEXs with tons of buyers and sellers include Gate.io, Bybit, KuCoin and HTX, all of which are considered safe and reliable.
